New York Times v OpenAI

New York Times v OpenAI

The New York Times, on the 27/12/2023, filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, accusing OpenAI of taking millions of copyrighted news articles without permission to train its AI platform.

OpenAI's defence revolves around the concept of fair use under the US Copyright Act. They argue that using copyrighted works, such as NYT articles, to train its AI technologies, like ChatGPT, is transformative and falls under fair use.

OpenAI also mentioned that they are actively addressing issues like regurgitation, where chatbots may inadvertently reproduce copyrighted content verbatim.
